Law has been defined and explained in
many different ways by the scholars (jurists) and philosophers of the field of
law. Everyone has tried to define law depending on the political, social and
economic factors and the kind of the system of production which existed during
his period. Let us now look at the definitions as seen in various sources:-

Austin – (through his book – The Province of Jurisprudence determined) :
Law is a command set by a superior being
to the inferior being and enforced by sanctions or punishment. The punishment
includes imprisonment, fine, compensation, injunctions and others.
Sir
John Salmond ( through his book – Jurisprudence)
Law is a body of principles, recognised
and applied by the state in the administration of justice. In other words the
law includes the principles or rules which are recognised and applied by the
Courts or tribunals.

Law refers to the regime that orders
human activities and relations through systematic application of the force of
politically organised society or through social pressure backed force in such a
society:
